Three Questions Everyone Asks

1

Do I need to know how to play?

No. Someone will choose a game with you, explain it in three parts and play the first round at your table. Here is how a table is set up.

The three parts: the goal, one turn, how it ends.
2

What does it cost?

€5 per adult and €2.50 for children aged 4 to 11, for the whole day. Under 4 is free. Drinks and toasties are extra, and every price is on the visiting page.

Pay once, stay until close, play as many games as you like.
3

Do I have to book?

Not for two to five people. Six or more, email three days ahead. On Friday and Saturday evenings small tables are walk-in only, so come before 18:00. Here is what to put in the email.

We reply within one working day, Tuesday to Saturday.

Your First Visit, Step by Step

  1. Come in and take any free table.

There is no host stand. If a table is empty, it is yours.

  2. Tell the floor person how many you are and how long you have.

An hour and a half and a four hour evening call for very different games.

  3. They bring two or three boxes to choose from.

Never more, because choosing from a wall of 640 is how evenings get lost.

  4. They teach the chosen game in three parts.

The goal, one turn, how it ends. The rule book stays in the box.

  5. They play the first round with you, then leave you to it.

Wave if you get stuck, and someone comes back to the table.

  6. You pay the table fee at the counter when you go.

€5 a head, whatever you played and however long you stayed.

The whole method is written out on the visiting page.

The Lending Shelf, Briefly

120 boxes you can take home for a week.

A lending card is €24 a year, or a box costs €3 a week without one. Either way there is a €20 cash deposit, and it comes back once the box has been counted with you at the counter. Everything about borrowing is on the lending shelf page, including how we count a box.

A Note From Mira About August

Every August we shut for two weeks, starting on the second Monday, and we open again on the Tuesday two weeks after that, at three. The tables get oiled, every box in the café gets the same count the lending shelf gets, and I go somewhere without dice for a bit. If you've borrowed a game, bring it back by the Sunday before we close, please.
